The hydraulic pump ensures uniform flow to enable the system to accumulate sufficient pressure to work. The machine would not perform well in case the pressure reduces abruptly or gradually. There is a possibility that cylinders move at a slower rate, a motor loses its power, and the entire system becomes weak or shaky. Pressure drop is a typical hydraulic problem. However, it is not completely understood by many people. This troubleshooting guide on hydraulic pump pressure drop is here to help you.
What Does Hydraulic Pump Pressure Drop Mean?
Hydraulic pump pressure drop means the system cannot keep the pressure it needs while working. This does not always mean the pump is broken. Pressure loss can happen anywhere in the system if fluid leaks out, flow is blocked, or parts get worn.
Pressure drop might happen suddenly or slowly over time. Knowing what a pressure drop looks like helps you find the real problem faster.
What Are the Common Signs of Hydraulic Pump Pressure Drop?
When a hydraulic pump loses pressure, you usually notice clear problems while the machine is running. Common signs include:
- Cylinders moving slowly or weakly
- Motors losing power or torque
- Machines are struggling to lift their usual loads
- Pressure gauges showing lower-than-normal readings
- The system is getting hotter than usual
These problems often get worse as the machine warms up. This can mean there is internal leakage or worn-out parts inside the pump or system.
Can Pressure Drop Be Caused by Something Other Than the Pump?
Yes, pressure drop isn't always caused by the pump itself. Other parts, like valves, hoses, or cylinders, can leak or wear out and cause pressure loss. Even dirty or old hydraulic fluid can affect pressure.
Before deciding the pump is the problem, it's important to check the whole hydraulic system carefully. Many pumps get replaced when the real issue is somewhere else in the system. Taking the time to inspect everything step by step can save you money and avoid unnecessary repairs.
What Causes Pressure Drop in a Hydraulic Pump?
Pressure drop happens when energy is lost as hydraulic fluid moves through the system. This loss lowers the pressure available to do work and usually points to a problem somewhere in the system. Knowing the common causes helps you find and fix issues faster.
How Does Friction Inside Hoses and Pipes Lower Pressure?
As hydraulic fluid flows through hoses, pipes, and fittings, it rubs against their inner surfaces. This rubbing creates resistance, which slows the fluid down and reduces pressure. If hoses are worn out, pipes have rough insides, or parts are low quality, friction gets worse, and pressure drops more.
Can Hose Length and Size Affect Pressure Drop?
Yes. Longer hoses mean the fluid has to travel farther, which adds more resistance. Smaller hoses make it harder for fluid to flow, forcing the pump to work harder to keep pressure up. Using hoses that are too long or too narrow often causes noticeable pressure loss.
Sharp Bends and Bad Hose Routing
Tight bends, loops, or messy hose layouts disturb smooth fluid flow. This creates turbulence, which increases resistance and causes pressure to drop faster. Keeping hoses clean and straight helps keep pressure steady.
Do Fittings and Connectors Cause Pressure Drop?
Yes, fittings like adapters and quick couplings can block flow if they are too small or damaged. Even small restrictions reduce the space through which fluid can flow, causing pressure loss. This is especially in systems with high flow needs.
How Does Heat Affect Pressure and Fluid Flow?
When hydraulic oil heats up, it gets thinner and flows more easily through small gaps inside pumps and valves. This can cause more internal leaks, which lowers system pressure. Pressure drop from heat usually shows up after the system has been running for a while.
In short, pressure drop happens because fluid faces resistance and leaks as it moves through the system. Understanding these causes helps keep your hydraulic system working well and saves energy.
How Do You Check System Pressure Correctly?
Here is how you can check it.
Use a Pressure Gauge in the Right Places
Put pressure gauges near the pump outlet and at important test points in the system. Run the machine under load and compare the readings to what the system should have.
- If pressure is low right at the pump outlet, it might mean the pump is worn out, or the relief valve is not working properly.
- If pressure is normal at the pump but low further down, the problem could be with valves or other parts like cylinders or motors.
Check the Relief Valve
If the relief valve is stuck open or set too low, it lets fluid flow back to the tank before the system can build enough pressure. Check the relief valve settings to make sure they match what the system needs.
Dirt or worn-out springs can stop the valve from sealing properly. It will be causing constant pressure loss.
How Do Control Valves Affect Hydraulic Pump Pressure?
Valves that control direction, pressure, or flow all affect system pressure. If valves have internal leaks, fluid can bypass where it is supposed to go, which will lower pressure at the working parts.
If valves feel very hot or the machine moves unevenly, the valves might be worn inside. Testing valves one by one helps find which one is causing trouble.
How Does Friction Inside Hoses and Pipes Lower Pressure?
0
Yes, worn parts inside the pump are a common cause, especially in older pumps. Parts like gears, vanes, pistons, or seals can wear down and let fluid leak inside the pump. This internal leak gets worse as the fluid heats up. It will cause pressure to drop during longer use.
How Does Friction Inside Hoses and Pipes Lower Pressure?
1
When hydraulic oil gets hot, it thins out and flows more easily through small, worn gaps inside pumps and valves.
- If pressure is okay when the system is cold but drops as it warms up, it usually means internal leaks inside the pump or valves.
- This is more likely a sign of worn parts inside, not leaks on the outside.
Checking pressure step-by-step like this helps you identify problems more quickly and avoid replacing unnecessary parts.
When Should You Replace a Hydraulic Pump?
Replacing the pump should be your last option. Only change the pump after you have checked and confirmed:
- The hydraulic fluid is in good condition
- The relief valve is working properly
- There are no big leaks or blockages in the system
- The cylinders, motors, and valves are all in good shape
If you replace the pump without addressing the underlying issue, the same problems will likely recur.
How Can You Prevent Pressure Drop in the Future?
To avoid pressure drop and keep your system running well, follow these simple steps:
- Check the gear pump manufacturer fluid regularly
- Change filters on schedule
- Keep an eye on pressure and temperature readings
- Don't overload the system beyond its limits
- Prevent dirt and contamination from getting into the system
Doing regular inspections helps catch problems early before they cause damage.
Troubleshoot Hydraulic Pump Pressure Drop Rightly!
Hydraulic pump pressure drop is a common problem. It usually happens for more than one reason. Different things can cause pressure to drop. To fix it, you need to check things step by step and then move on to more detailed tests. Doing proper troubleshooting saves you time, reduces machine downtime, and helps your hydraulic system work smoothly and reliably.
