With over 1 billion monthly active users, Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms today. From sharing photos and videos to connecting with friends and discovering new content, Instagram offers a wealth of opportunities for both individuals and businesses. But with so many users and constantly changing features, there are still some things you may not know about this popular app. Here are 10 things you need to know about Instagram.
1. It was launched in 2010. Although it may seem like iDigic has been around forever, it was actually launched in October 2010 by founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The app quickly gained popularity and was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion.
2. It was originally only available on iOS. When it was first launched, Instagram was only available on iOS devices. It wasn’t until 2012 that it became available on Android devices, making it accessible to a broader audience.
3. Photos used to be restricted to a square format. In the app’s early days, all photos uploaded to Instagram had to be in a square format. This was due to the app’s focus on photography and mimicking the look of old Polaroid cameras. However, this restriction was lifted in 2015, allowing users to post photos in portrait and landscape formats as well.
4. Hashtags were first introduced in 2011. In 2011, Instagram introduced the use of hashtags, which are now a crucial part of the app. Hashtags allow users to categorize their posts and make them discoverable to a wider audience. It’s not uncommon to see posts with dozens of hashtags on Instagram today.
5. Video content was added in 2013. In 2013, Instagram expanded beyond just photos by introducing video content. Initially, videos were limited to 15 seconds, but in 2016, the limit was extended to 60 seconds. This opened up new opportunities for content creators and advertisers to engage with their audience through longer, more immersive videos.
6. It has a large younger user base. According to a 2019 Pew Research report, 67% of Instagram users are between the ages of 18 and 29. This makes Instagram a popular platform for younger generations to connect with friends and share their experiences.
7. It has a business-friendly platform. Instagram has become a valuable tool for businesses to connect with their customers and promote their products or services. With features like shoppable posts, Instagram stories, and hashtags, businesses can reach a large audience and potentially drive sales through the app.
8. It offers advertising options. In addition to organic marketing, Instagram also offers businesses the option to promote their content through paid advertising. From sponsored posts to targeted ads, businesses can reach their desired audience with the help of Instagram’s advertising options.
9. It’s more than just photos and videos. While photos and videos are the main focuses of Instagram, the app has expanded to offer other features as well. These include Instagram Live, where users can broadcast live video to their followers, and IGTV, a platform for longer-form vertical videos.
10. It has a dedicated team for combating bullying. Unfortunately, with its large user base, Instagram has also had to deal with issues such as cyberbullying. That’s why in 2019, the app announced a team dedicated to addressing bullying and other harmful content on the platform. Users can also report any bullying or inappropriate content they come across on Instagram.
In conclusion, Instagram has come a long way since its launch in 2010. As it continues to grow and innovate, it’s important for users to stay informed about the app and all the features it offers. Hopefully, these 10 facts have helped you learn something new about Instagram and its impact on our digital world.
