Card making is a popular hobby loved by people of all ages. It brings out the creativity in us and allows us to express ourselves through personalized cards for our loved ones. Whether it’s for a special occasion or just to brighten someone’s day, a handmade card is always appreciated and cherished. If you’re new to card making, you may be wondering what supplies you need to get started. Here are 10 essentials to have in your card making arsenal.
1. Cardstock
The foundation of any card is the cardstock. This is the sturdy paper that forms the base of your card. It comes in different colors, sizes, and textures, making it versatile for any design. When choosing cardstock, make sure it’s acid and lignin-free to prevent yellowing over time.
2. Patterned Paper
To add more interest and personality to your cards, patterned paper is essential. It comes in various designs and themes, from classic polka dots to floral prints. You can mix and match different patterns to create unique and eye-catching cards.
3. Scissors or Paper Trimmer
Scissors are a no-brainer when it comes to cutting paper for your cards. However, if you want more precise and clean cuts, a paper trimmer is a must-have. It also saves you time and effort, especially when you’re making multiple cards.
4. Adhesives
To stick your paper and embellishments onto your card, you need reliable adhesives. Different adhesives work better for specific materials. For instance, you’ll need liquid glue for intricate designs and a tape runner for larger surfaces. Make sure to stock up on both for all your card making needs.
5. Stamps and Ink
Stamps are a great way to add images and sentiments to your cards. They come in various designs and sizes, making it easy to find ones that suit your style. To use stamps, you’ll also need ink pads in different colors. Experiment with different ink colors to spruce up your designs.
6. Markers or Watercolor Paints
If you’re feeling more adventurous, adding hand-drawn elements to your cards is a fun and creative touch. For this, you’ll need markers or watercolor paints. These can add a personal and unique touch to your cards and will surely impress anyone who receives them.

8. Embossing Powder and Heat Gun
Embossing is a technique that gives a raised and glossy effect to your cards. To achieve this, you’ll need embossing powder, a heat gun, and stamps. This added texture and shine will make your cards stand out.
9. Embellishments
Embellishments are the finishing touch to your cards. They could be stickers, ribbons, buttons, or even small trinkets. These add dimension and interest to your cards, making them more unique and special.
10. Storage and Organization
Last but not least, keeping your supplies organized is key to a stress-free and enjoyable card making experience. Make sure to have storage solutions for your paper, stamps, and other supplies to keep your workspace clutter-free.
