Group E features four-time world champions Germany, debutants Curaçao, African powerhouse Ivory Coast and South American qualifiers Ecuador. It is a group with a clear favorite, a fascinating underdog story and competitive mid-table teams.
THE TEAMS
Germany
FIFA Ranking: Around 12 to 16
Germany are the group's dominant force on paper. They have won four FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E titles in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. Recent tournaments have been disappointing. They went out in the group stage in 2018 and again in the Round of 16 in 2022. In 2026 the pressure to perform as a four-time champion is significant.
Germany play two of their three group games in Houston and one in Miami. Their key players come from Bayern Munich and Bundesliga clubs. A young, energetic squad under a relatively new coaching setup enters this tournament with something to prove.
Curaçao
FIFA Ranking: Around 85 to 95
Curaçao are the smallest nation ever to qualify for a men's World Cup with a population of approximately 150,000 people. They qualified through CONCACAF. Their players are largely from Dutch and European leagues given the close historical ties between Curaçao and the Netherlands. Playing their debut match against Germany on June 14 in Houston is simultaneously the most intimidating and most exciting moment in their country's sporting history.
Ivory Coast
FIFA Ranking: Around 50 to 60
Ivory Coast are one of Africa's most talented nations. They have produced world-class players for decades including Didier Drogba in previous generations. Their current squad has Premier League and European league experience throughout. Ivory Coast won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 and 2024. They are capable of a strong group stage performance.
Ecuador
FIFA Ranking: Around 40 to 50
Ecuador qualified through CONMEBOL. The same tough qualifying route that produces Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay teams means Ecuador are battle-hardened. They opened the 2022 World Cup with a win over the host Qatar. Ecuador play direct, physical football with quality going forward.
