Not like the story of “Goldilocks and the A few Bears,” the place Goldilocks tried sleeping on two beds prior to she located that the third mattress was just appropriate for her — my nickname is Goldilocks, but this is not a fairy tale. This is a True Story about locating my perfect latex mattress 40 many years back, when I bought my very first bed, and my challenging search to find a substitute.
Although growing up, I used to babysit our neighbor’s young children. When she realized I would gotten engaged, she invited me to her residence one particular working day to recommend I acquire a latex mattress like hers. She pulled the sheets off her king measurement mattress so that she could demonstrate me how the mattress experienced not sagged, and pointed out how the corners and edges were nevertheless agency following an remarkable quantity of time. I desire I could don’t forget the specific amount of a long time she’d informed me that she and her husband had been employing their mattress, but I do don’t forget that due to the fact of her small demonstration, I understood that I needed to obtain a latex mattress just like it even even though I afterwards identified that it would price me about twice what the regular ‘spring’ mattresses have been selling for at the time. I searched the nearby furniture stores, but could not discover this latex mattress everywhere. I remembered that when we had moved south, my mother experienced obtained significantly of her furnishings from a product sales rep at a massive furnishings retailer in a nearby city. He said that though the keep did not inventory this mattress, he could buy it, and I asked him to buy a solid latex mattress for me “SIGHT UNSEEN.”
My spouse and I slept soundly on this latex mattress for 35 a long time with no enduring any aches or pains as we grew more mature, and we partly attribute our flexibility from medicine and the good health we appreciate to this latex mattress! It was not right up until about the thirty third calendar year when we discovered that the go over was donning out and exposing the latex in a couple of spots, so we simply put it in a zippered mattress protect. This worked properly right up until the thirty fourth year, when we started noticing slight sagging and body indentations. We then commenced our look for to purchase another latex mattress like it. I searched online for the very same latex mattress manufacturer, but was disappointed to find out that they experienced closed their doorways. A neighbor advised we pay a visit to a small, neighborhood mattress maker in our location whose household had been creating mattresses for 3 generations. I wished to be particular that he could supply the identical latex as that of our very first latex mattress. I advised the owner the title of its producer, and I keep in mind him saying, “All latex is the same.” He was improper! Obtaining purchased a few mattresses inside a 3-year interval, I imagine I’m certified to report: ALL latex is NOT the very same!
About 1 yr afterwards, we observed we weren’t sleeping as easily since our new latex mattress was sagging with slight valleys on possibly aspect of the bed exactly where each and every of us lay. We named the maker. It took a while for him to occur check out on it, but when he did see it, he explained that it failed to seem like it was sagging. I reminded him that when I might called him, I might informed him that he wouldn’t see the sagging — he experienced to lay on the mattress to truly feel the valleys. He did not lay on the bed, but he did press his fingers down into the mattress in several distinct locations and he was surprised to see how deep his hands “sunk down” into the mattress… like there was not significantly assist.
He ordered a new latex mattress to exchange it, but this time he ordered the firmest a single he could. This 2nd latex alternative mattress did nicely until we might had it almost 1 yr, and then when yet again we noticed sagging with slight valleys where we lay. yoursite.com did some investigating and identified that the business that made my 35-calendar year old latex mattress was in enterprise again, but the closest retailer that carried their manufacturer was 3 several hours away. We created the vacation one weekend only to discover that the business had cheapened the way it was developing its latex mattresses. We identified a big dice of sound latex in a distinct zippered plastic case beside a latex mattress, which led us to feel that the mattress was created of this reliable latex. But when we lifted the mattress to see if it was ‘heavy’ latex like our 35-12 months outdated latex mattress, we ended up quite amazed to discover how lightweight this new mattress was! Soon after speaking to the store owner, we discovered that the previous company experienced sold its business along with its organization name, and the new owners had been sandwiching a skinny piece of latex in among levels of polyurethane foam, and edging it with polyurethane foam about the outside edges, which he mentioned would lengthen the daily life of this so-named ‘latex’ mattress. We then uncovered that the mattress was concluded on A single-Aspect ONLY. I will by no means understand how these new features would advantage the client, but I can see how the daily life of this so-referred to as ‘latex’ mattress is shortened, which evidently advantages the mattress manufacturers.
Right after returning property and researching the world wide web, we now know what the massive mattress makers are carrying out. You will locate that the bulk of the large mattress companies, who have been in company for generations, have since resold their organizations. A lot of of these new proprietors and share holders are intrigued in making huge, fast returns on their investments. They have redesigned and promoted their mattresses to put large income in their pockets, but the shortcuts they are generating to increase their revenue are decreasing the helpful life of their mattresses. You do the math. If they all get collectively and determine to reduce the lifestyle of their products in half, we consumers are compelled to purchase their products Far more Frequently and they all income even much more. For example: One of their shortcuts and advertising tactics is made to sell you on the benefits of getting a “a single-sided” mattress, but in truth, the existence of your mattress has been minimize in 50 % and you will require to purchase at the very least twice as a lot of mattresses in your lifetime if you want to slumber easily. In my lookup for the best latex mattress, I in fact spoke to one particular mattress store proprietor years back who admitted she wished they would ‘bring back’ the two-sided latex mattresses.
We also discovered that the two previous reliable latex mattresses we owned commenced to “sink and fall short” right after a single 12 months due to the fact they ended up not manufactured of the firmer Dunlop Latex. They ended up made of the newer Talalay Latex, which is processed by incorporating more air which can probably cause the mattress to compress and soften in excess of time. Soon after understanding the variations between the two production procedures, I relate an Angle Cake with the softer Talalay Latex, and I relate a Pound Cake with the firmer Dunlop Latex. I’d even talked to the Talalay mattress company that created both of our latex mattresses which softened after only a single 12 months. A single of their consumer support reps instructed me that she loved how her Talalay mattress softened in excess of time and “conformed” to her body to cushion it. I informed her that she was still quite youthful and what she considered cushioning, my partner and I deemed awkward valleys. We personally necessary and expected a mattress to give the assist our bodies required for more than one particular, 5, or potentially seven many years. The business did substitute that initial Talalay mattress that failed right after the first calendar year, but they would not exchange the 2nd one particular. And, Consumer BEWARE: All mattress warranties are not the identical. Make sure you study and “realize” ALL the problems of your guarantee Just before you buy your mattress.
In continuing my on the web research for my best latex mattress, I uncovered a quite caring and valuable mattress producer. Lee Carter, the owner and now my new buddy, has a prosperity of individual encounter constructing mattresses and has an abundance of information regarding the mattress business. He has revealed critical insider data that I was not conscious of, these kinds of as a new government regulation which has caused mattress companies to use chemicals to make hearth resistant mattresses. Was the general general public notified of this new regulation? Not only was I involved about exposing my entire body to the possibly hazardous substances in a new mattress, chemicals can also emit fumes and odors, which could result in me to become nauseated due to my sensitivity to smells. To my knowledge, Lee Carter owns the only business that delivers its customers “chemical totally free” mattresses after merely obtaining a experienced prescription.
