November 9th – Thursday, and 11th – Saturday in Shanghai:
Dennis and I left at midnight from LA on Asiana Airlines – on a fourteen hour flight by means of Seoul, Korea — Incheon Airport – and on to Shanghai – Pu Dong Airport. With a 3 hour layover in Seoul -we 1st obtained a glimpse of the Asian society, and walked the long corridor of the Obligation Cost-free Retailers and stopped in the Wendy Café for latte and tea. When we landed in Shanghai – Mr. Gao Mim met us – with a indicator that Ai informed me to see – with large letters expressing “Dennis and Joan, Welcome to Shanghai”. Pleasant to have Mr. Go – who performs for Kobayashi San – and Lilly, who is Chinese – satisfy us and spirit us away. Our luggage went by auto to the resort – and Dennis, Lilly and I rode the Maglev from the airport to the west aspect of Shanghai – a train that cost nine billions to construct by the Chinese Govt and flew to a highest of 424 Kilometers over the seven minute ride. They stated that it would get 45 minutes by automobile – with the traffic in the Town – to cross from the river and attain our lodge. An Australian sat throughout from us – and we marveled at the whiz of the train – and the instantaneous zip of a practice passing in the other course. Off the practice and into a taxi to the lodge, the Ramada found in the western side, Pu Xi – the outdated element – among the People’s Square and the Bund – the waterfront at the Huangpu River. The four of us appreciated a late lunch in the restaurant, Nan Xinya, on the fourth floor of the resort – with the round serving in the center of the table loaded with Cantonese flavors – such as a fried fish with a red sauce – delightful. Dennis and I napped – and went for a prolonged wander down the Nanjing Rd – the pedestrian road powering the hotel – to the Bund – and enjoyed the array of colorful lights down the street and on the waterfront – and the blue boat that sailed throughout our check out. It was a gorgeous night – and the long stroll back again took us to the People’s Sq. – when we recognized that we might absent too far and retraced our measures. We slept like toddlers on the organization mattress with the coverlet – and had been welcomed to China.
November twelfth – Sunday in Shanghai:
We woke to a misty sky – and planned to fulfill Lilly at 9AM – and first appreciated breakfast in the resort. Lilly took us in the early morning to City God Temple Bazaar – and the Yu Garden. The Backyard garden was the house of Mr. Pan, created in 1559, in the Ming Dynasty. Backyard in China involves the trees, vegetation, rock and properties – and is the home the place nature is brought in to be knowledgeable in the living. We walked the route and via the Chinese structures – close to the swimming pools – by way of the gateways – and liked the elegance of the growth, the numerous turning paths, the round entry techniques – the rocks from the bottom of the Taihu Lake (a single of the five biggest clean h2o lakes) with several intriguing shapes from the erosion of the water – piled large – and occasionally with a “tower of contentment” in the clouds (on the rocks) and Beautiful Jade Stone. 5 dragon partitions, dragons with a few fingers (for normal individuals) – a pearl in the dragons mouth – and a single with a frog in a sympiotic relationship – and tails that ripple the partitions top down the paths. About the corner, we exited the Backyard into the many retailers – and entered the Silk Manufacturing facility – to see how the silk function spins itself in silk thread in its cocoon – and is cooked and placed in h2o so that with a brush the females can stir the cocoons and find the silk threads. Then six or 8 threads are spun collectively to make the stunning silk thread – and we noticed the bedding and clothes that are usually produced from the good silks of China. Earlier, ahead of coming into the Garden – we spotted the Nan Xiang Dumpling Restaurant with a prolonged line, and Lilly advised us about the yummy crab and pork dumplings. Right after some searching in the section store – and looking at pearl, jade and treasured stones in jewelry – we tried the dumplings, with a bit of ginger inside of – and they ended up delicious. We returned to purchase a silk blanket and cover in the Silk Factory – and they even experienced “California king”. We hurried by taxi to return to the lodge – since Kobayashi San and Gao San were waiting around for us for some lunch.
The company van – Fukuoka Knit Organization, Kobayashi San’s business – took us throughout town – sights of the streets of the Town, the tall apartment properties, the theater and place of work structures for this Town of sixteen million individuals. We traveled to the Hong District, in close proximity to the Embassies, such as the Japanese Embassy. The cafe was Chizhen in Hong Qiao – and we dined in a little room – and had been shocked by the array of foods on the round glass serving piece in the center of the desk – and which includes the shark fin soup (high-priced and a delicacy in China). We modified the strategies for the afternoon – excellent adjust – and from the hotel walked up the Nan Jing to Shu Ya Liang Zi – a conventional Chinese massage – on the eighth floor – and all five of us sat in the area every in our personal reclining chair – with very hot drinking water at our toes – and then the foot therapeutic massage, deeply baring into our feet – and ear cleansing, a lot to our shock. We were properly rested and massaged and returned to the lodge, happily – and Dennis and I stopped in Yong An – the section store – and I enjoyed purchasing “hair toys” to hold my hair in area – and the woman who confirmed me how to do this. Lilly taught us to say “Bu Ya Xie Xie” (no thanks) to all the vendors who were trying to sell us fakes, watches and purses. And also, Bu Xie (thank you). And “Ni Hao” (Mandarin for Hi there). That evening we dressed and went to the Ritz Carlton to the Acrobat Display and to the Grape’s Backyard garden on Xinle Rd. for supper – and experienced our 1st taste of the Chinese delicacy of “river crab”. Dennis and I essential some classes on how to consume this, and that the component in the middle is considered the greatest. It is all fascinating and a uncommon encounter to be so generously hosted by men and women who know Shanghai and it lifestyle, and an addition to my Rotary GSE expertise in Japan with a lot of buddies there.
